Youth Arts Award

Bathurst Arts Council and businesses throughout Bathurst are committed to supporting young people in the Arts. 

The Youth Arts Award is a monthly award that recognises outstanding young people in our community. Please note that nominations are not given over the Christmas period (Jan/Dec) each year.

Monthly Recipients 2008

 

The 2008 Youth Arts Award winner was:  Mark Graham
A member of Kelso High's Circus Surreal, Mark is an outstanding role model and performer.  He has participated in more than 70 community performance throughout 2008.  He is a mentor to younger circus students, always generous with his time, running the morning training sessions for the circus troupe and constantly encouragng other young people to achieve their best in their performance and their everyday lives.
 

February - Tobias Bland

Tobias has been studying acting, film and musical theatre for over 5 years at a local, national and international level.  He travels to Sydney fortnightly to study with the Australian Institute of Performing Arts and recently traveled to the USA to do a short film in Los Angeles and intensive training with the New York Film Academy.  He has played the lead role in a number of Bathurst Carillon Theatre productions including Oliver and most recently Summer of the Aliens.  He has appeared on a number of television commercials and popular shows including Home and Away.

 

March - Brendan Nelson

Brendan was nominated late last year by Holy Family School for his contribution to the school band for 5 years as a Percussionist and is now in Year 7 at St. Stanislaus College where he has already settled into the College Stage Band.  As Band Captain, Brendan regularly tutored junior band members. He is a scholarship holder at the Mitchell Conservatorium and supports the community by performing in the Bathurst City & RSL Youth Band, and the Mitchell Conservatorium Jazz Ensemble.   

 

 

April - Megan Brealey

Megan has recently finished Year 12 at Kelso High school.  She has been involved in the Rock Eisteddfod for 5 years including choreographing the 2007 production. She has received many awards at local eisteddfods for Dance including 1st place in the Gulgong Eisteddfod senior jazz championship.  Megan was a member of the NSW Public Schools Senior Dance Company which required traveling to Sydney weekly for practice.  This year Megan was selected to join the National School of Dance in Newcastle where she is now studying fulltime.

 

May - Caleb Auhl

Caleb has achieved a significant high level of proficiency on the trombone and is a Mitchell Conservatorium scholarship holder. He plays in many community and school ensembles including the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra, Bathurst City & RSL Concert Band and Youth Band, St Stanislaus College Stage Band, Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble and the renowned Bathurst Brass Boys.

 

June -  Elise Cooper

Elise has achieved high level performance skills on the oboe and is now only one step away from a Diploma in musical performance.  She is as a member of the Bathurst Youth Orchestra, Macquarie Philharmonia and numerous school ensembles at Mackillop College where she is in year 12. Elise has been awarded scholarships at the Mitchell Conservatorium and has been a soloist and regular performer in the Bathurst community for a number of years.

 

July - William Jones 

Trumpet/member of Bathurst Brass Boys, Bathurst City & RSL Concert BAnd and Bathurst Youth Band and a member of Swing Factor.

 

August - Stephen Watson 

Trombone/member of Bathurst Brass Boys, Bathurst City & RSL Concert Band, Youth Band and St Stanislaus Concert BAnd, Stage Band and Brass Ensemble.

 

September - Gemma Lord

Piano. Gemma topped Music 2, Extension Music and Visual Arts for her HSC assessment.  She has played piano at a number of official occasions and respresented the school numerous times with Circus Surreal performing on Tissue and Acobalance.

 

October - Mark Graham - circus (2008 winner)

 

November - Natasha Mitchell

Choreography. Since leaving Kelso High, Natasha has volunteered her time to assist with dance and drama training students from yrs 7 to 12 for Kelso High's Rock Eisteddfod entries
