Bathurst Arts Council Column for Wed July 22, 2009

Step up singers, songwriters and musos.

Have you often thought about singing Handel’s Messiah, but never got round to it? Or have you sung it before, and would love to do so again? Bathurst’s Allegri Singers are inviting people to join the cast of the November 2009 production of Handel’s Messiah. There will be no auditions for joining the choir for this performance, but a certain level of musical ability is required, and singers will be expected to attend most of the rehearsals (Tuesday nights starting August 25).  Anyone interested should phone Jill Groves on 6337 7780.

A weekly Singers and Songwriters night has begun at The Kings on George St. Wednesdays from 7pm try out new songs, acts and performances. The nights are open to a wide variety of musical styles - folk, jazz, country, blues, popular and are the perfect setting for budding soloists, duos or trios. They supply a PA, microphones and instrument lead.

Our very own community radio station 2MCE have a huge program of local music organised for Sounds Live this August. The highlight will be the Sounds Live Cabaret at BMEC on Saturday on August 1 – which will be broadcast live on the internet and recorded on CD. The special guest at Sounds Live is legendary spoken word master and verse spinner, Miles Merrill, who brought poetry slams from his hometown Chicago, to Australia. While in Bathurst Local Stages have Miles running a ‘wordshop’ on Saturday 1 August from 12noon to 3pm at BMEC. This is a great opportunity for writers and poets in the region to work with Miles. The workshop combines writing techniques with public speaking skills. Book a spot now as places are limited (BMEC 6333 6161 for workshop bookings or Sounds Live Cabaret tickets).

The Bathurst Arts Council meetings have moved to the fourth Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is next Tuesday July 28, 5.30pm at Mitchell Conservatorium.

artscouncillogosmallTHE CATHEDRAL BELLS OF BATHURST - A TOWER IS BORN

History was made in Bathurst on Friday, 26th June when the newly refurbished Cathedral Bells rang out over the City for the first time. The occasion recognised the consecration and installation of the new Roman Catholic Bishop of Bathurst, The Most Reverend Michael McKenna.

A team of bellringers from Sydney came to Bathurst for the occasion, which included Ms June Catchpoole the first Benefactor of the new tower and Mr Ron Shepherd who has been supervising the installation of the bells.

With most of the scaffolding removed from the outside of the tower it is now possible to appreciate its crisp lines and imposing shape. It is indeed a proud achievement for the Bathurst community, being funded principally by the local community (with support from the Federal and State governments and the Bathurst Regional Council). It was designed by a Bathurst architect and engineers, built by a local building company and includes the skilled contribution of many Bathurst trades-people.

Just before 3 pm, those attending the Mayor’s reception for Bishop McKenna walked from the Civic Centre to Kings Parade, (opposite All Saints’ Cathedral), to join around one thousand members of the Bathurst community who had come to witness this special event. Among them were NSW State Member for Bathurst, Mr Gerard Martin MP, Bell and Tower Benefactors, architect Mr Henry Bialowas, principals of Tablelands Builders Messrs Robert Barlow and Steve Ralph, Mr Maurice McNeil chair of the Bells Fundraising Committee and other members of the Bells Executive.

At the appointed time the crowed hushed in anticipation, waiting for the bells to commence their ringing. The glass walls of the tower allowed the crowd to see the ringers commence their work and three new Taylor’s bells and five historic Warner bells turn over for the first time in well over one hundred years. Thus they rang out over the city in a spirit of proclamation and welcome.

The Official Opening of the tower will occur at 11 am on Saturday, 31st October, 2009. The Dean of Bathurst, The Very Reverend Andrew Sempell, invites members of the Bathurst and wider community to be part of this significant event.

artscouncillogosmallATTENTION  ALL  SINGERS !  AN OPPORTUNITY TO SING HANDEL`S  “MESSIAH”.

Have you often thought about  singing Handel`s “Messiah”, but never got round to it? Or have you sung it before, and would love to do so again?

In either case, here is your opportunity – no need to play that CD to sing along with, or confine your singing to the shower!

The Allegri Singers of Bathurst, invite you to join them in performance of this wonderful work,  under the musical direction of William Moxey, on Sunday, 15th November, 2009, in All Saints` Cathedral, Bathurst.

Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, 25th August, at 7.30pm in studio 1, at the Mitchell Conservatorium of Music, next to the courthouse, in Russell Street, and thereafter, every Tuesday evening until the performance.

There will be no auditions for joining  the choir for this performance,  but a certain level of musical ability is required, and singers will be expected to attend most of the rehearsals. A small fee of $5. per rehearsal will be payable, to contribute to the cost of visiting soloists, and orchestra.

Anyone interested should  phone Jill Groves, on 6337 7780

artscouncillogosmallTHE  ALLEGRI  SINGERS  INVITE  YOU  TO  A  CONCERT  PERFORMANCE OF  HENRY  PURCELL`S   “DIDO &  AENEAS”

The Allegri Singers, under the direction of William Moxey, are well advanced in their preparation for their next concert, on Saturday, 15th August, in the Uniting Church, William St., Bathurst, at 7.30 pm.

“Dido & Aeneas” is generally acknowledged to be the first English opera, and the first known performance was at a girl`s school in 1689.

Composed for vocal soloists, orchestra and chorus, it is a captivating tale of adventure, misfortune, love, witchcraft, and ultimate tragedy.

The moods change from the joyous celebration of the love-match of Dido and Aeneas, through the tension and suspense of the chicanery of the sorceress and her minions, to the anguish and despair of love lost, and the demise of the heroine.    Well, what more could you ask for?

The music is a joy to perform and, we trust, to listen to.  This will be a concert performance, lasting about an hour. The Allegri Singers are really looking forward to joining in this performance with the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra, and some very distinguished visiting and local vocal soloists.

This promises to be a real treat, so don`t miss out!  Tickets available at the door.  $20.  Or concession $15.

Put it in your diary!  Saturday, 15th August, at 7.30 pm.

Uniting Church, William Street, Bathurst.

MUCH interest in chairs and stools throughout April and May. We have a set of six beautiful Blackwood cafe chair, this year's new release chair. We celebrate this neat and stylish chair by this fantastic offer: buy the six and pay only for five!
All new orders on chairs in June will be 10% OFF.

Paul has been working on a large order using Blackheart Sassafras timber sourced from sustainable forest management in Tasmania. That means no clear fell, but rather harvesting a tree here or there - not going back to the same coupe for many years.
We are not at liberty to give any more details about the job as this stage, but Paul thought you'd be interested in before and after photos of the components and the completed drawer boxes. Every one of these have individually been dressed, cut, dovetailed, assembled and sanded to a very fine 400 grit finish. This is the attention to detail that gives you your lustrous finish when you take home one of Paul's beautiful pieces.

Settled in for winter? If you’re spending more time indoors these next few months, look around your walls at all your favourite pictures and photos. Could some of them do with a fresh new look? Perhaps they just need to be taken apart and cleaned. A new mat would do wonders and doesn’t have to cost the earth.

I have just completed fifteen photo frames for a customer – a thick white moulding with a spacer under the edge to keep the glass from touching the photos. I put flexi points in the back so the customer can take them apart and put in her favourite photos, all black and whites, with clear adhesive photo corners. She wanted it as her “winter project”. What a great idea! These are frames you can’t find in a ready-made shop – in fact you can choose any moulding you like and have them all the same size or different sizes. Hanging them as a group makes a great family photo wall.

Winter means there’s more time to attend painting classes and meet with a sewing group. What better satisfaction is there than seeing your own work beautifully presented – and protected – in a frame of you own choice, made especially for you?

Just a few thoughts from my workshop at O’Connell. Don’t forget my free delivery service too:

Framing is always 10% less at O’Connell… and we deliver!

See you soon,

Acoustic Sunday - Millthorpe
Just letting you know (and if you could forward this on to your mailing list) that Acoustic Sunday is on again at The Old Mill Cafe, Pym Street, Millthorpe; 2-4 pm each Sunday. The idea is the provide an opportunity for local musicians to play a set or two - not an open mike or jam as such, but more of a feature spot. Also happy to hear from people wanting to perform occasionally.
The longer story is that I clarified with Music NSW who assured me that the legislation had changed and for smaller venues for which music was not the main attraction a POPE licence was no longer required. The Minister for Planning has since issued a circular stating this and for local councils to get out of the way.
Any enquiries please contact me - jonwilby@ozemail.com.au or ring 0424-744-388 (dodgey access.)

Jack Duggans Irish Pub - Bathurst
Sunday afternoon sessions are being encouraged at the Jack Duggan's Irish Pub in George St, Bathurst.  Kath Hudson and Mark Adams are both regular performers. The publican is also interested in having duos and smaller groups play there at other times.

artscouncillogosmallThe All Saints’ Cathedral Lunchtime Recitals occur on the first Wednesday of each month from 12:30 to 1 pm.  The aim of this activity is to provide local musicians an opportunity to perform in the context of the Cathedral, including use of the resources of the building - both its instruments and acoustics.  There is a gold coin donation which helps finance the music ministry at the Cathedral.

People are invited to bring their lunch and sit and listen to some fine music while enjoying the ambience of the Cathedral building.
